Joana Pico, PhD, is a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the UBC Wine Research Centre under the supervision of Simone D. Castellarin. As an Analytical Food Chemist, her main role at the WBRC will be to examine, together with members from Abel Rosado's team, the phenolic profiling of different BC wild berry species with the aim of understanding how phenolics could help on the modulation of starch digestion (through in vitro analyses). These studies could help to unravel the potential antidiabetic properties of wild berries for the prevention of type-2 diabetes. The postharvest quality of wild berries will be also evaluated to determine their feasibility for fresh consumption.
